Gold Fields' Tarkwa Mine Manager receives top honour at Ghana Mining Industry Awards

Friday, 12 December 2025

Gold Fields Ghana has reaffirmed its leadership in the mining sector with multiple awards at the 11th Ghana Mining Industry Awards (GMIA), and the historic achievement of Dr. Catherine Kuupol Kuutor, Manager of the Tarkwa mine.

Dr Kuutor was named Mining Personality of the Year, the first woman to receive this prestigious honour, for her exemplary leadership and outstanding achievement in the mining industry. Over the years, she has received various awards and was the Female Mining Professional of the Year at the 6th GMIA.

Senior Procurement Officer at Gold Fields' Tarkwa mine, Rosina Essel-Moses was also the 1st Runner Up - Female Mining Professional of the Year (Non-technical).

Gold Fields Ghana Limited (Tarkwa Mine) picked up other awards - 1st runner up for the Best Performer in Diversity and Inclusion and 2nd runner up for Best Green Mine. The Gold Fields Ghana Foundation won the Corporate Social Investment Project of the Year.

These recognitions demonstrate Gold Fields' commitment to leadership, socio-economic development, diversity and sustainability.

Corporate Social Investment Project of the Year (Winner)

The Tarkwa and Abosso Stadium won the Corporate Social Investment Project of the Year. Funded by the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation, the facility has undergone a remarkable transformation from a dilapidated 400‑seat venue into an 8,200‑capacity stadium, equipped with a FIFA‑standard pitch, modern dressing rooms, a media box, accessibility features for the physically challenged, and dedicated medical and doping control rooms. Officially handed over in August 2024, the US$16.2 million investment has provided a new home ground for Medeama SC and now hosts major football matches including the Ghana Premier League and MTN FA Cup semi‑finals. Beyond football, the stadium has become a unifying space for communities and a catalyst for socio‑economic development. The impact of the stadium aligns with Gold Fields' purpose of creating value beyond mining.

Diversity and Inclusion (1st Runner Up)

Gold Fields is firmly committed to creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace where all employees, regardless of gender, background, or ability—can thrive. The company's Diversity and Inclusion policy seeks to achieve gender parity across all job categories and levels, ensure equal opportunities for persons with disabilities, foster a culture that values diverse perspectives, and expand female representation in leadership, technical, and operational roles. In 2024, a series of high‑impact initiatives were introduced, with a strong emphasis on women's empowerment and broader inclusion. These efforts are designed to break traditional barriers in mining by creating intentional pathways for women and under‑represented groups to enter, grow, and lead within the industry.

Best Green Mine (2nd Runner Up)

Tarkwa mine's recognition as Best Green Mine highlights its strong commitment to sustainable and innovative waste management practices. Disposing of an average of 1,700 tons of solid waste annually, the mine has introduced two major environmentally friendly projects to significantly reduce its footprint. A newly commissioned 18m³ incinerator plant now cuts landfill waste by up to 90%, while a reclassification of waste streams into five categories has enhanced segregation, recycling, and disposal. Plastic waste is channelled for recycling, food waste from catering facilities is repurposed as feed for local piggeries, and materials such as scrap metal, batteries, oil, drums, containers, and wood are recycled and reused. All other combustible waste is incinerated. In addition, a modern sewage treatment plant has been constructed to process mine effluent and recycle treated water for operational use, reinforcing Tarkwa Mine's role as a leader in sustainable mining.

Special Recognition

Well done to Sharon Panin Amoesi, a pupil of Tarkwa Gold Fields JHS for winning the inter-mines first aid and safety essay competition. Her outstanding essay discussed the importance of observing safe behaviours and practices in mining communities.

Reflecting on the achievements, Mr. Elliot Twum, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Gold Fields Ghana, said: "These honours reflect the dedication of our people and the strength of our purpose — creating value beyond mining. From leadership excellence to community investment, diversity and sustainability, Gold Fields continues to set benchmarks that drive progress in Ghana's mining industry and beyond."

The GMIA, organised annually, is a prestigious platform for recognising milestones and celebrating excellence across Ghana's mining industry.
