Building Stronger Communities Through Healthcare Access

Friday, 8 August 2025

The Gold Fields Ghana Foundation held its third quarterly community medical outreach of the year, bringing essential healthcare services directly to the people of Koduakrom — a host community of the Damang mine.

The outreach provided free medical care to over 730 residents, offering a wide range of services including blood pressure and blood sugar checks, eye examinations, BMI assessments, dental care, ENT screenings, breast cancer and malaria testing. Medications were dispensed based on individual screenings, ensuring that each patient received tailored treatment at no cost.

The event also coincided with the commemoration of World Hepatitis Day, where participants received critical education on hepatitis awareness and prevention. In partnership with Unilever Ghana and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), the Foundation distributed dental toothpaste and facilitated the registration and renewal of NHIS cards for more than 700 people — a step toward long-term healthcare access for the community.

A notable highlight of the outreach was the presence of healthcare professionals who are past and present beneficiaries of the Foundation's scholarship programme. They made up about 60% of the medical team, reflecting the Foundation's long-term investment in building local capacity and empowering future leaders in healthcare.

They were supported by doctors and nurses from EuraCare, Gold Fields Ghana's healthcare service provider and the Prestea Huni-Valley and Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal Assemblies.

With over US$4.9 million invested in health initiatives, the Foundation continues to prioritise the health and wellbeing of its host communities.
