Championing Youth Excellence at African Scrabble Championship

Wednesday, 24 September 2025

In a world where education continues to evolve, nurturing talent in unconventional spaces has become important. Recognising this, the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation demonstrated its commitment to youth development by supporting students from the ScrabbletonGH Foundation.

This year, the Foundation backed ten students as they journeyed from the National Scrabble Qualifiers in Ghana to the prestigious 2nd African Youth Scrabble Championship held in Nairobi, Kenya.

Ghana made its first-ever appearance at the championship, and of the ten students representing the country, a remarkable eight hailed from Tarkwa. Competing against 138 players from across Africa, the team placed third, with four students from Tarkwa ranking among Africa's Top 20.

Through such initiatives, the Foundation continues to nurture talent, expand horizons and empower youth in its host communities. It also reinforces the Foundation's contribution to United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education), which promotes inclusive and equitable education and lifelong learning.

But the impact of this initiative went far beyond the scoreboard. For many of the students, the championship marked a series of firsts: their first flight, first international trip and first experience on an international stage. They returned not just as competitors, but as confident, inspired young leaders—ready to dream bigger and aim higher.

To date, the Foundation has invested approximately US$15 million in education and training programmes across its host communities—fueling dreams and unlocking potential.
