Growing a Greener Future: Empowering Farmers Through Sustainable Agriculture

Friday, 1 August 2025

Through impactful initiatives, such as the Sustainable Community Empowerment and Economic Development (SEED) programme, the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation continues to drive sustainable development in the host communities of the Tarkwa and Damang mines.

Focused on improving livelihoods and protecting the environment, SEED promoted long-term agricultural sustainability, with oil palm cultivation emerging as a key driver of economic growth.

Building on this success, the Foundation launched the Community Oil Palm Production (COPP) initiative in 2022. Since its inception, COPP has equipped farmers with high-yield seedlings, protective gear, farm inputs, fertilisers, weedicides and hands-on training to boost productivity and improve livelihoods.

This year, COPP is taking a bold step toward environmental sustainability by phasing out inorganic fertilisers and adopting organic compost. This transition aligns with global goals for climate action (SDG 13), responsible consumption (SDG 12), and life on land (SDG 15). A structured three-year plan is underway.

As part of this green shift, 120 farmers from the host communities of the Tarkwa mine received organic fertilisers from Green-Gro Limited, a trusted compost manufacturer in Ghana. They also participated in a three-day training focused on compost application, soil health management and farm safety practices.

The Foundation remains committed to sustaining livelihoods, empowering communities and cultivating a greener, more sustainable future.
