World Clean-up Day: Empowering Communities for a Sustainable Future

Thursday, 25 September 2025

Demonstrating its commitment to sustainable community development, the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation commemorated World Clean-up Day, with a series of impactful activities in Huniso, one of its host communities.

The event brought together community leaders, students, volunteers and stakeholders in a joint effort to improve sanitation, raise environmental awareness and promote public health.

This year's global theme, "strive for five", aimed to mobilise 5% of the world's population to participate in clean-up activities, with a special focus on textile and fashion waste. The campaign encouraged communities to adopt sustainable consumption habits and reduce waste through reuse and recycling.

As part of the celebration, the Foundation officially handed over a 40,000-litre small town water supply system to Huniso community. Built at a cost of over US$31,000, the facility will provide safe and reliable drinking water to households, schools and public institutions. It will also reduce waterborne diseases, improve hygiene and enhance overall community wellbeing.

Speaking at the event, the Chief of Huniso, Nana Nvidah, commended the Foundation for its continued investment in infrastructure and called on community members to take collective responsibility in reducing waste and protecting the environment.

Other initiatives undertaken to commemorate the day included a public education on waste management, recycling and health risks linked to poor sanitation, as well as health sensitisation on the recent typhoid fever outbreak.
