The quarterly community medical outreach is a well patronised event, which many people look forward to. The second outreach for the year was hosted by Wangarakrom, a host community of the Tarkwa mine.
More than 460 people from Wangarakrom, Badukrom and surrounding communities accessed free medical services, including screening for blood sugar, blood pressure, breast cancer and malaria. Some had their eyes, ears, nose and throat examined and their body mass index (BMI) checked.
A range of medicines and spectacles were given out for free, while some cases were referred to the hospital for further investigation and treatment. A forum was also held to educate people on hypertension and mental health.
Furthermore, the Foundation partnered with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to register and renew subscriptions for close to 500 people to enable them to access medical care offered under the scheme.
The medical services were delivered by doctors and nurses from EuraCare, Gold Fields Ghana’s healthcare service provider and the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal Assembly. They were supported by past and present scholarship recipients, who are in the medical field.
The medical outreach brings basic health care closer to the communities, while promoting awareness about medical conditions and encouraging healthy lifestyles. Improving access to quality health services is a priority for the Foundation, which has invested over US$4.6 million in health and wellness programmes in our host communities.
