Promoting menstrual hygiene among girls
Thursday, 3 July 2025
During the menstrual health week, young peer educators raised awareness on menstrual and personal hygiene, educating over 3,600 pupils in 15 community basic schools.
Under the guidance of professionals from the Ghana Education Service and Ghana Health Service, the peer educators led interactive discussions on menstruation and the misconceptions surrounding it in their schools.
They also demonstrated the proper use of sanitary pads and hygienic practices. The boys were not left out; they were actively involved in the educational sessions. In addition, all the girls received sanitary pads.
About the peer educators' programme
- The peer educators are selected pupils, who have been trained to educate their peers on adolescent reproductive health issues.
- They play a vital role in raising awareness on these critical issues among their peers.
- They are trained by professionals under the School Health Education Programme (SHEP).
- SHEP forms part of the Adolescent Health and Sexual Reproductive Development Programme, which was initiated by the Foundation in 2019 in collaboration with the Tarkwa-Nsuaem municipal health and education directorates.
- The programme aims to advance adolescent health education to ensure young girls and boys are well informed and protected.
