Gold Fields Ghana picks up prestigious industry awards

Monday, 3 December 2018

Accra, 3 December 2018:  Gold Fields Ghana's efforts at contributing to communities and the country have been recognised through a number of awards recently.

Gold Fields Ghana, as operator of the Tarkwa mine, picked up three prestigious awards at the 17th edition of the Ghana Club 100 event held in Accra on 23 November 2018.

Gold Fields emerged Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Company of the Year, Second Largest Company of the Year, and was also ranked third among the 100 Best Companies in Ghana.

The company's performance this year is a marked improvement on 2017. While it maintained its position as the second largest company, it improved from fourth (4th) to third (3rd) in the overall company ranking, and also took the top slot for CSR, a category for which it was not ranked last year.

Gold Fields' Executive Vice President and Head of West Africa, Alfred Baku, attributed the performance to the company's drive for continuous improvement.

"We always believe we can improve by charting new paths and exploring value-creation opportunities that will generate returns for our communities, our employees, our government and our shareholders," he said.

The Tarkwa mine was also adjudged Best Performer in Environmental Management and Best Performer in Occupational Health and Safety at the 4th Ghana Mining Industry Awards (GMIA) held in Accra on 30 November 2018.

On the GMIA awards, Baku said, "Mining companies are being held to a high standard especially when it comes to health, safety and management of the environment. It is recognition for our commitment to focus on how we mine and the legacy we leave behind, not just a singular focus on what we mine."

Asanko Gold Ghana, in which Gold Fields holds 45%, was adjudged Mining Company of the Year at the GMIA.

The Ghana Club 100 event is the premier corporate awards event in Ghana, and is organised by the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC). GIPC ranks the largest companies according to their volume of tax payment, while the overall company ranking is based on size, growth and profitability. Ranking for CSR is based on a company's demonstrated commitment to environmental stewardship, protection of employees' rights, and corporate social investment.

Gold Fields' Tarkwa mine is the single largest gold producer in Ghana, with annual production of over 500,000 ounces. In November, the mine made a dividend payment of US$15m to the Government of Ghana for the 2017 financial year. It employs over 4,500 Ghanaians directly and through contractors, and almost 90% of its total procurement goes to Ghanaian vendors and suppliers.
